Reading the structure

The structure 3!n7!n2!n describes everything after the country code and check digits. Each group is a length followed by a character type: n means digits only, a means uppercase letters only, and c means letters or digits. An exclamation mark means the length is fixed.

This matters when you are typing an IBAN by hand: in a group marked n, a letter O where a zero belongs is a structural error the checker will report, not a checksum failure.
