These are published format rules, implemented in Paysavo's own code. This is a reference for the structure of the number — it is not a directory of banks.

37 of them are in the SEPA area. Being a SEPA country is about where the account is, not about which schemes a particular bank supports.

Reading an IBAN

It always starts the same way

Every IBAN opens with a two-letter country code and two check digits. Everything after that is the country's own account number format, padded to a fixed length.

Length is fixed per country

A Norwegian IBAN is 15 characters and a Maltese one is 31. There is no single IBAN length, which is why a checker has to know the country before it can judge the length.

Not every country uses one

The United States, Canada, Australia and India do not use IBANs at all. They use routing numbers, BSBs and IFSC codes instead, and an IBAN field will not accept them.
